Frederick Wiseman, master of grim documentaries, burst on to the national scene with this classic look inside a Massachusetts mental institution. Citing patient confidentiality laws, the courts shut this one down in the late '60s. The ban was lifted in the early '90s, but it's still rarely been seen. Probably the only film to ever be banned in the USA for reasons other than obscenity or national security, TITICUT FOLLIES is extremely disturbing in its portrayal of the patients and their doctors--and it's hard to tell who is more deranged. A time capsule that shows how far we have come in understanding mental illness, FOLLIES is all the more disturbing with the knowledge this was probably considered acceptable treatment in 1967.
