Here is a beautiful letterboxed print of this amazing British cult classic, sourced from a Japanese DVD (in English, no subtitles). MELODY has gained a fervent cult over the years due to its blissfully innocent picture of two adolescents in love. Tracy Hyde herself is a cult hero based solely on her tremendous performance in the title role. Melody shares a crush with Daniel (the equally great Mark Lester), and the two decide they are going to get married. What sets MELODY apart from other puppy-love stories is that it veers from stark British realism to a surrealistic fantasy world where marriage between two pre-teens is a totally acceptable notion. While this could be creepy or even hokey, the film transcends our normally accepted notions and reaches the child in everyone's heart. When The Bee Gees' "You Don't Know What It's Like" swells up, you truly feel the love. Masterfully written by Alan Parker (who later lost his innocence with nihilism like MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, PINK FLOYD: THE WALL and ANGEL HEART), MELODY is a cult classic in the truest sense of the word.
