Sure, THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT is dated, but it still has the power to stir up a strong emotional reaction. A very young Bruce Davison stars as Simon, a naive young man on campus who slowly gets involved in the counterculture, with tragic results. With direction that's a cross between French New Wave and Busby Berkeley, this is a time capsule from an era when America's young felt they could change the world, and Hollywood didn't mind squashing those hopes with movies that had unhappy endings.
This was put out by MGM in 1970, the same year they were hoping ZABRISKIE POINT would also bring in the hippie crowd. (Also like ZABRISKIE, this film has an excellent contemporary soundtrack, with a heavy Neil Young flavor.) Both were laughed off the screen, and MGM suffered greatly, but they have survived as cult classics. We offer the best prints of each, so pick up one or both of them today and take yourself on an enjoyable journey to the past. (If you're looking to stage a good triple feature, think about also picking up DRIVE, HE SAID.)
